Background of the Study
Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by rapid deterioration in liver function, often due to viral infections, toxins, or underlying liver disease (Oluwadare et al., 2023). The condition can lead to severe complications, including hepatic encephalopathy, bleeding, and multi-organ failure (Akinmoladun et al., 2024). Nurses are central to the management of ALF through monitoring, administering treatments, and supporting patients with intensive care needs (Abiola et al., 2024). At Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, the management of ALF requires a multidisciplinary approach, with nurses playing an important role in early identification, supportive care, and patient education. However, there is limited research on the preparedness of nurses for managing ALF cases, which can affect patient outcomes. This study seeks to assess nurses’ preparedness for managing acute liver failure cases and identify areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Acute liver failure is a critical medical emergency requiring rapid intervention to prevent morbidity and mortality (Ibrahim et al., 2023). Nurses working in intensive care units and emergency departments are expected to be prepared for managing ALF, but the level of preparedness at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital has not been thoroughly examined. This study will investigate the extent to which nurses are prepared to manage ALF and identify potential gaps in their knowledge and practice.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the intensive care and emergency units of Ogun State University Teaching Hospital. A limitation is that the study will rely on self-reported data from nurses, which may introduce bias. Additionally, the study will not assess the perspectives of other healthcare professionals in the management of acute liver failure.
